Holiday to Trevor Auntie in Hayes

Created by Anthony 6 years ago
Trevor was my greatest friend growing up in our teens and beyond. I have been thinking of him a lot lately. He comes into my head at least once a week even now. We went everywhere together, 7 days a week, we were like brothers. Even his Mam used to call me her 4th son. During the summer of 1961 we went to Trevor's Aunties dahn London. Neither of us had been any further than Castleton on the train, but we did OK, we enjoyed it. As lads we always reminisced about going down to London in our own car and we selected a bubble car because they were the cheapest. Anyway, we ended up going by train because neither of us were old enough to drive. I can't remember everything about our visit but what I do is that we went into Hayes one night to see the Rolling Stones. It was when they were just starting off. It was fantastic, Trev loved it and I could stop him from bopping about the place, jumping up and down, spinning round thoroughly enjoying himself. I was too of course. The "Stones" played "Get back", their first big hit I believe, we, me and Trev, went ballistic with our dancing. It was a wonderful night and I have never forgotten it with my greatest friend Trev their with me. I joined the Army in 1964 and left my mate behind. I was always in touch and whenever I went on leave we would go out all the time together. His Mam told me that he missed me so much, she thought he was going to run away and find me. He eventually joined the Royal Marines and I didn't hear from him for a while. I was very proud of him joining the Royal Marines. We still met up regularly when I came home on leave and went out for our first legal pint together when we were 18. I was 6 month older than Trev, but him being the best looking, he was always in charge when it came down to chatting up lasses. He was a handsome lad with his blonde curls and his slim upright stance, and there was me about 3 inches shorter and dark hair and freckles. We did alright with girls though, only because of Trev though. Another time we went down to the New Swimming Baths when Johnny Kidd and the Pirates was on, they used to turn the baths into a dance hall. We were dressed to the nines and looked the business in our ice blue jeans and chelsea boots. I loved my mate Trev and missed him so much until I found him 6 months before he died. I would always tell my family and friends about him and still do to this day. He had a big impact on my life that is still with me today. I did not know he had died until later. I was mortified that I hadn't been there for him in his last days. I felt very guilty as I still do, because when I saw him while having a pint together, he told me he had 6 months to live, but because he said it in such a way, I thought he was kidding. He always used to kid me on when we were kids. The facts were that he was telling me the truth and hadn't taken him seriously. To this day I reproach and beat myself up about it and wish I could turn back the clock. I still think of you Trev my old friend and will never forget you until the day I die and come and have a pint with you. Love you forever.
